Default question for you pc whizzkids

about 3 weeks ago an NTL engineers called to change my modem as we wanted one that would work on pc(Me) and the laptop (Xp). ever since hes been, my pc constantly switches itself on after its been turned off. is it likely that a fault has occurred with the pc as the guy never actually did anything to it, he just disconnected my ethernet cable, or could someone externally be trying to get into my computer????
i have the Norton antivirus and firewalls

Check in your BIOS to see whether it's set to 'Wake on LAN'. This is a feature that allows administrators of networks to remotely turn on PC's to carry out some work on them without leaving their chairs.

What he just said - sounds the most likely reason.

Also it could be that you are having a crash or 'blue screen of death' during the shutdown process. If you have not set error reporting to halt on errors, then the computer would just restart itself. I suspect that you might be getting a memory exception, ergo the blue screen of death and the re-start.

To find if this is the case, 'right click' on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop, click on 'properties'. From the properties window, click on the 'advanced' tab, then in the section 'start up and recovery' click on 'settings'. Under 'system failure' make sure the box 'Automatically Restart' is UNchecked, then click 'ok'.

Turn the computer off and if you are getting the BSOD then it should now halt on the screen, you can now read the error messages and fault codes, write these down and post them back here and then someone should be able to tell you what the likely cause of the problem is and how to fix it.
