    Default DIY cambelt change

How easy is it to do a cambelt change on a 3.2 V6? It really needs doing now but cant bring myself to pay over £400 to the stealers.
Me and my dad have done changes before but not on an engine like this

Any info would be much appreciated!

don't do it without a locking kit...and they are £150 for the kit, add about £110 for the belt kit and then fingers crossed you get it right.... you'll also need torx spanners as well..

i've done loads of them, and i'll caution you against doing it without the correct tools

    HOW MUCH!!!..

thats a ferkin joke.... they take just under an hour to do the belt and the pump adds 15 mins...so allow an hour and a half...

the belt kit is £100 to them, £140 retail, and the pump is £15 to them and £28 retail...add another £5 for coolant and thats the bones of it..allow £100/Hr for main dealer labour and my dodgy maths brings it to £300 +V...and thats fair..

TBH i think its another case of dealers not knowing what they are doing, the woman thought the water pump was totally separate from the cambelt side of things, even after consulting (i use this word loosley) "mechanic".

I shall get some more quotes tomorrow me thinks.

to be fair it is.. it's just behind the same cover, thats all..thats why it's best to change it at the same time, as it's the same amount of work twice if you do them at seperate intervals...

the cambelt on the V6 just drives the 4 cams.. the waterpump is driven by the aux drive belt along with the alternator and the AC pump.. the aux drive belt used to drive the PAS pump as well on the older engines, but that pulley is now just an idler..

Sounds like one quoted you for the price of the timing belt service plus the cost of a water pump replacement - the two separate tasks. The other place might have quoted for the whole job in one go. I hope you can see what I mean!

I didnt mention a service on the first quote, i was going to ask them after they quoted but they can stick it at that price....2nd quote is more realistic, they said they would knock £50ish of the price of a service if done at the same time, but i will service it myself
