Standard advice from me given the nightmare we had with the first LCD we bought.

    http://forum.vectra-c.com/showthread.php?t=47509

Try Richers Sounds. Free five year Warranty and very good prices. May not be the latest model but given we paid £1000 for the most cutting edge one (from Currys) and it broke out of warranty I personally don't care anymore.

In terms of brand we have three (soon to be four Samsungs ) and I think they are Brill. (The broken one is about to be replaced but only after a bit of a battle)

Whatever you end up with and wherever you go get a five year warranty.

edit: BTW I don't mean pay stupid money for additional cover. I mean one that comes free with the TV

What size you after?, and why specifically LCD? Plasmas are often better depending on what you mostly watch/use the TV for. I went for a Panasonic 37" plasma just recently as it had superb blacks performance and didn't have the motion smearing that LCDs can suffer from on fast moving subjects. Cracking price from that place as well considering most places sell it for £800. Not just that TV, but prices are good for all others.

Samsung are also good buys and Sony good TVs too - although I couldn't find one with the spec I wanted in the price range I was after.

If you can hang on for a bit Lazer Screens get their release date later this year, and they'll make lcd tellys look a 90's pub rear projection screen

Start with this linky, there are some good sights showing the screens working next to one another, the comparison is startling......

In that case I'd suggest the Panasonic TH42PX80B - at least add it to your short list. It's the 42" of the one I mentioned I have. I'd have gone for this size but with the unit it needed to fit into it would have left very little air gap around it, so I went for the 37". Other than the size it's exactly the same. They both get cracking reviews and the price is even under budget! Has a whole stack of connections - 3 x HDMI, 2 x RGB SCART, Component, Composite and even a PC socket so great if you want to hook the laptop up to it - which I wanted to and did.

The picture is superb and in Hi-Def like from Xbox 360 etc. it's simply stunning - the black performance is simply superb. Also has a Freeview tuner built-in with a nicely laid out EPG. Also has an SD card slot for viewing pics on. Didn't think I'd use it but it's actually quite handy.

One thing - it's not a true 1080p, it's only really 1080i. It will accept a 1080p signal but then make it 1080i. You would be very hard pushed to tell the difference unless you had some seriously high end source kit.

And at that price there's money left in your budget for a decent wall bracket (if you were planning to do that) or for some other goodies, or simply keep in your pocket.
