    Default Centre heat shield lugs

I've had an irritating rattle from the car last couple of weeks, and finally found it today. The centre heat shield on above the exhaust has dropped on the offside so it's flapping about.

It looks like the holes (arrow) have corroded and dropped past the nuts that hold it. Ideally I'd like to just undo the nuts (marked in the photo) and use one or two larger washers to secure it back in place - provided the nuts will undo.

Question is does anyone know if the studs in question hold anything else? They look to be "blind" from what I can see into part of the underside bodywork, but I'd like to be sure before trying to undo them and find I can't do the damned things back up.

when you say rattle mate is it like a vibration noise when you pull off in low revs? and it makes a metal sounding rattle

No - I'm pretty sure this is the cause of the noise. It's mostly over bumps and at motorway speeds, where I think the airflow is flapping the shield around.

Ah I see. Noises like that are a nightmare to find. I was convinced this was inside the cabin, it's only because I was checking the back boxes, wheels and tyres I noticed this was hanging loose.

Dead easy to check though from the side of the car, where its dropped it can be lifted with one finger.

Well, I shouldn't have worried about undoing them - blasted things sheared straight off .

I guess it will be self tapping screws but I'll need to get it on ramps as my drill won't fit under and I'm not happy just using the jack in this situation.

I've managed to use 3 metal clips on the edge of the plate into what I guess are drain holes, but whether they'll stay in place once I get back on the motorway I doubt!

Soddin' things were corroded so badly they might as well have been welded on - no chance of getting them off in one piece. I'll have to drill through and secure them with new bolts in another place near the drain holes but only when I can safely get under the car.

I wouldn't take it off completely without a replacement - you may heat up bits above it not intended to heat up .

I used some map clips (of all things!) as a temp solution until I can get under to sort it properly.
