    Default 1.8 VVTI's

Whats the general opinion on the Vectra 1.8 VVTI? Currently am seeing deals everywhere for 57 plate vvti's for between £7500 & £8500

Decent price but am wondering if there is a catch? All have SRi trim so look the part, but what about underneath?

if you're not after eye bleeding power then they're not at all bad.... had several now as loaners/rentals and i'm getting to like it quite a bit.. no where near as quick as a 2.2 or 32. or a 19cdti but still a very nice engine.

Good for running about in the town, much more suited to that than the diesels (it doesn't clog up). For motorway you'd be better going for the diesel or 2.2.

have the 2.2 direct (pre) but was stunned to see how low a price these were going for, some with only 2-3k miles on them

quite fancy an upgrade to the facelift so will see what the wifey says

My old man has this engine in his SRI (06), not as quick as my CDTI 150 diesal through the gears (his suspension is way, way better than on my Elite though). But still a really nice car to drive.

i've driven a load of 1.8vvts (hire cars through work) and they aren't too badly off for power. it's just like other vvts you really have to explore the rev range before they start to release their potential. basically you need to keep the revs high to keep them feeling quick - but then of course, they drink the fuel!

i'd also noticed that some perform worse than others... not sure why, can't imagine trim levels would make that much difference. usually got the life, design or sri models.

having said all that... the 1.9cdti is the better performer and economy is unbeaten. so much so that i had to buy one!

I had a 1.8 VVTi as a hire car for two weeks and whilst it was noticably slower than my 1.9 150 smoker, it was still very servicable. The fuel economy gave approx 450miles to a tank (compared to 650 from the desiel) which I dont think is bad. Thing to way up with diesel v the 1.8 is will you get back in fuel saving what you spend extra for the diesel?

The only thing that would make me think twice about one is the mid gear acceleration. Overtaking a lorry on an A road would take a fair bit more room than say the 2.2 or 1.9d.

Mines not too bad on the motorway, keeps going at 70-80mph for ages, with no problems, and gives me high 30mpg

Overtaking is the only downside from the hire cars I've had. Once up to speed they seem fine.
