    Default PETROL vs DIESEL?

Ive been thinking about the prices on petrol and diesel and around here at the moment its £1.10 litre Petrol and
    £1.20 litre Diesel.

Now I always thought Diesel would be cheaper to run as in a
1.9CDTi its about 45MPG (correct?) and in my old 1.8SRi it was 30MPG.

Im no good at maths so i was wondering if any mathematical people on here could help with my query-

How many more miles can a diesel (1.9CDTi for example) travel than a 1.8SRi Petrol on a full tank and/or on the same amount of fuel cost?

    This is my attempt:
    £50 of petrol at £1.10litre = 45.45litres/9.99Gallons at 30MPG = 299.7Miles Range.
    £50 of Diesel at £1.20litre = 41.66litres/9.16Gallons at 45MPG = 407.7Miles Range.

So the diesel can travel 108 Miles further. (407-299miles)
    Correct???

If this is right how much more money's worth of petrol would it take for the 1.8SRi to travel the 407miles like the diesel?

    Thanx

Using your calculations the amount you would need for the petrol to do the same as a diesel would be £68.02

Nice thread mate, I'd be interested as well. Also take into account the extra cost of purchasing a CDTI over the 1.8.

For fuel alone, there's still a fair difference, if you do lots of mileage every year.
I'll go by your figures of 30mpg for the petrol and 45mpg diesel. That's about right.
The easiest way to look at the overall cost (imo) is cost per mile for each: -
    Diesel gallon = £5.46
    Petrol gallon = £5.00

    Cost per mile diesel = 5.46/45 = 12.1p
    Cost per mile petrol = 5.00/30 = 16.7p

So, it's still the biggest part of 5p a mile cheaper to run the diesel car.

    Cost per year diesel (say 20,000 miles) = 0.121 x 20000 = £2400
    Cost per year petrol (20,000 miles) = 0.167 x 20000 = £3340

But as the post Ste above, there's other things to consider, which may make the difference even closer.

Ok, using your calculations again and going on average mileage per year the diesel will cost in fuel £1471.67, the petrol will cost £2002.00.

Saying you own the car for 5 years and petrol/diesel price are fixed at the current rate, in the time you own the diesel you will spend 7358.35, the petrol 10010 making a difference of 2651.65.

Now get a few quotes on how much each car will cost and you will see if its better to own the diesel over the petrol

    EDIT: Average mileage of 12000pa

    I can offer some comparison.

My last Veccy was a 2.0dti. I used to put £40 in it on a Monday Morning and that got me to work and back, plus the other little runs like shopping etc, for the whole working week plus Saturday

My new Veccy is a 2.2 Direct Petrol and the exact same routine is now costing me £55 for the same duration. So a sharp increase

    Mileage : 40000

    For Diesel
    ---------

    407.7Mile/£50 = 0.123p

    For Petrol
    ---------

    299.7miles/£50 = 0.167

So for the Petrol to cover 407.7miles, then 0.167x407.7 = £68.02

    Petrol Cost = £68.02-£50 = £18.02

Plus take into account Road Tax and Insurance the deisel wins the pennies to the mile only catch that kind stomps deisels is the cost to buy the car not run it.

What about initial purchase price too, amortised over, say, 3 years?
