    Default Cleaned EGR valve today

After spanner light and limp mode yesterday I got up early doors and followed some top info from this site. I removed, cleaned and re-fitted the EGR valve without any problems. Then drove 22 miles to work, bit of running around and another 22 miles back with no running problems at all. She even feels more spritely now the EGR is de-coked and cleaned.

Off the back of this, I just want to say thanks to everyone for their invaluable contributions to what is clearly a top forum!

I wonder if cleaning the EGR valve remedy is going to be like cleaning the ICV valve on Vectra 'b's.

Ie. common fault cured by taking apart and cleaning out the crud.

Well worth a try seeing as Egr valves are as rare as rocking horse sh!t.

You'd be suprised at how true that post could be....

if it was a renault forum i'd be telling you to clean the EGR every 3 months....

Lets just say that someone elses V6 3ltr CDti came to my workshops with poor running very recently.. after a very good decoke ( it needed it badly) of the egr system, normal ( more than spritely) performance has returned....

If all these units need is a 'quick' decoke, then it's madness to replece them.. buy a tuppence gasket and regularly clean the unit out at home..save yourself £100's even if you can find one to fit..

Surely there could be a spray or sorts (like dry Graphite) that you could put on the moving parts to top the crud from building up??

it's have to be something that resists high heat as you're dealing with manifold temp gases..Graphite is a form of carbon and thats what we're trying to remove anyway.... could it be teflon coated??.. maybe..but until then it's a can of carb cleaner and a very small paintbrush to soak/agitate the carbon off...

don't forget to use a pair of longnose pliers to gently work the shaft..you need to make sure it travels smoothly when it opens ( or that it opens at all.. )

Update: almost a week later and 200 miles down the line. No problems to report. I honestly think the car feel more powerful now the EGR valve has been cleaned. I'd recommend this treatment to anyone whose car has done 50k+ and who hasn't had the EGR cleaned or replaced at some point. It took 30 minutes to remove, clean and refit the valve. Easy peasy!

Is there an 'how to' somewhere or link to a thread to do this job.
