    Default 1st and 2nd gear

    Hey, wondering if someone can help me with this...

    first of all my car is 2.2 direct with a 5 speed gearbox (F23?)

    It started yesterday, the car will not go from 1st to 2nd without a lot of grinding noises and I literally have to slam it in to get it to go into gear. So what ive been doing is going from 1st to 3rd which is obviously not ideal.
    It did seem OK when going from any other gear to 2nd (e.g. 3rd to 2nd) but even thats doing the same now and not going into gear properly.

    Also starting tonight when i came to work, it jumps out of 1st on its own back into neutral! I was sitting at the lights with foot down on clutch in 1st, went to pull off when the lights changed and it started to go but then slipped out of 1st to neutral! Nearly got rear ended by 5 series! Its done this 4 times tonight on an 18 mile journey and not just when pulling off, when i was just sitting there at some lights it did it too, I have to hold the stick in place.

    Can anyone help? I serously feel like crashing the fking thing into a wall, its pretty much undrivable.

    Can anyone help with this? Maybe I should paste this into another room, not many posts in here seem to get an overwhelming response.

    Is it new gear box time? I hope not

    it's going to be either the box or the clutch..without seeing it/driving it i suspect the pressure plate in the clutch has failed as it seems to be dragging and not allowing you to select a gear to move off in..if you tried to pull off in 3rd would it let you select that gear ( i.e. when the shafts are not already turning? )

    if it does let you engage 3rd from standing, then it's either the alignment of the linkage, stretched cables on the selector or shot selector forks in the gearbox..

    Can you easily select first and 2nd when the engine is off??

    Hi mate thanks for your reply.

    I can pull off in 3rd OK (albeit very slowly which is to be expected). I can also select 1st and 2nd easily when the engine is off.

    Its now throwing up the spanner symbol as of tonight, even though the problem is the same as yesterday and the day before.

    2nd gear is basically un-usable, I cant trust using it, sometimes it goes in OK, sometimes it goes in after a lot of grinding noises, and other times it just grinds so I have to skip it and go straight for 3rd.

    1st gear is hit and miss too, sometimes its fine, other times it jumps out and into neutral. Im having to hold it in place which is not good for going round a corners as im having to steer one handed, get round the corner in 1st, then change into 3rd.

    This is really getting to me now, plus its also pretty dangerous. Thanks again.

    Could anyone confirm if its the F23 I have in my car?

    And if so, would an F23 from any car fit mine (e.g. Astra, Zaffira, Vec b etc).

    Also could anyone recommend a good place in SE london / NW kent that does recon boxes?

    If its a 5 speed you have then the F23 it is mate. Best let Mark comment on the compatibility of all F23's as some might be a bit different but I bet if so then they can be easily changed over.
