Default 1.9 CDTi 150 running problem

Well after owning my SRi for just under 3 months I've hit my first major problem.

I filled up at a branch of Tesco today and set off. About 30 seconds later the car lost power bigtime and wouldn't go more than about 30 miles an hour taking ages to get there. I assume the car has gone into limp home mode but no spanner light! Thinking the fuel might be coincidence... but thought I'd note it in case it is relevant.

Limped home. Popped the bonnet to see if anything was obviously wrong. All looked OK so started her up and she was running fine again. Took for a drive and seemed OK. Boost coming on with nice power.

Anyway, took the other half to West Midlands Safari park and about half way round (in one of the Lion enclosures actually) the spanner light came on. Still running fine, idling nicely, but not much power. Turned off... back on... no spanner light... boost comes on but then 30 secs later no power, no boost and spanner light back on.

Took ages to get home due to limp home mode, but got back just now. I've read about EGR and swirl valve problems. I'm going to do more searches on here now but I found the metal bar with the 4 rubber things attached and that is all OK and not loose or anything. Am I right in thinking that's the swirl valve?

So is money going on EGR? If so, can I clean it myself? I'm not covered by warranty due to over 70k miles so I could really do without a big bill. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. Including suggestions of getting an extended warranty and taking it to a dealer after that... lol!

    Thanks in advance.

Yes metal rod over the 4 'rubber things' which is a base of the injectors is the swirl valve.
Search this site there is a good section on cleaning the EGR, apparently the valve sticks due to corrosion.
If you wish to replace check Vaux world as they are much cheaper than Vx and will probably have stock.
May also be worth a chat with Vx whilst mileage is a bit high if under 3YO and with full SH they have been known to help.

I've found the EGR removal and cleaning instructions so will be trying this tomorrow morning. Hopefully it'll be a positive outcome!

right...been out and removed the EGR valve and cleaned it up. didn't take the solenoid end to bits as the plunger was moving very freely. lubricated it all with WD40 anyway and cleaned tons of soot and coked up crap from within the valve itself.

going to take it for a blast to work now and see if that has solved the problem.

one question regarding the swirl valve. i didn't realise until this morning that the rod has movement. you can rock it back and forth slightly. can anyone tell me if this is right? should the bar be solid unless the valve is operational? if not then i'm wondering if this might be a problem - even though there isn't any sign of leakage or anything. the previous owner had it replaced under warranty back in 06 and i was under the impression the inlet manifold needed to be replaced to cure this one. surely if that's the case the swirl problem shouldn't return.

any clarification on the above would be appreciated.

cheers all and have a good day. it's setting itself up to be a hot one!
