Default LCD TV broke out of warranty.

We bought a 32" Samsung LCD TV a few years ago which cost us just under a £1000. It came with a one year warranty.

After 15 months it broke. Got on to Samsung customer services who were not interested. In fact they gave us a script which was so patronising I hung up on them but not before they told me that we could contact their Head Office but that the story would be the same.

I've read on some of the AV forums that TVs are supposed to last for at least 5 years so we fired off a letter to Samsung anyway and prepared for the fight.

They sent us two very polite letters back, one asking for an engineers report and another for a copy of the original receipt.

This morning they phoned to say that having reviewed the situation they are going to give us a brand new replacement TV. Never had to argue about anything. They just did it.

Anyway hope this helps anyone else. Don't be put off by the customer services. They are just there to stop you taking it further.

Proving yet again that it pays to complain to the right people and in the right way.

Good result, but legally Samsung do not have to do anything, your contract is with the shop that sold you the TV

A TV does not have to last 5 years, it has to last a reasonable length of time, this is debateable as to the length but you would expect a £1k tv to last longer than 15 months

Yep, Know the contact is with the shop but Currys were sticking to the line that the TV was out of warranty.

Five years is not set in stone obviously but it should last more than 15 months given it cost £1000.

As above plus the fact that our 10 year old Panasonic (CRT admittedly) was still working 100% despite living in the conservatory with mad changes in temperature.
