The direct is to do with the injection system (IIRC) and just means it is a slightly better version of the original Vx 2.2 engine.

Cam belt intervals for Vauxhalls are 40k or 80k, I think for the 2.2 direct it is 80k, but I may be wrong.

Some of the chaps with the 2.2 Direct have been getting between 35 and 40 mpg, more often it is 30-35 though, its a very economical engine if you drive it gently!!!!!

I understand that the 2.2 direct has a cam chain - not a belt.
    Am I misinformed?

Welcome to the site mate. As for the 'direct' on the back (direct injection), what that means is, that inside the cylinder the injected fuel is directed straight into the cylinder above the piston as opposed to indirect injection whereby there is what is known as a swirl chamber, a small recess that is machined into the cylinder head into which the fuel is injected. The indirect system causes the air and fuel to swirl around mixing together in order to permit a better flame spread within the ignition phase. With the direct injection, it allows for a higher compression ratio, giving more power. Don't know if I've baffled you here, but that's basically what it means. BTW, I'm a diesel fitter if you hadn't guessed

Believe it or not I nearly chose that career in the Army, Aircraft Technician in the REME, but I thought the Tanks were a far more exciting prospect so became a Vehicle Mechanic instaead. (If only I knew then....... )
