Default circuit tester + 2 min of your time to check your own car plz?

Please could some one with a circuit tester check there AUX sockets (cigar lighter)

    he story is

Front is reading +12.97ish volts which is right (red pin in bottom centre of socket and black on outter shell)

    but

Rear (between front seats) read -12.97ish volts? again with (red pin in bottom centre of socket and black on outter shell)

is this normal? is this why my phone charger blew up?

going to stealers about this but dont want to be fed aload of cow $hit?

I don't see there's a problem as you have the correct / same voltage at both sockets... 12.9v isnt particularly high, most 12v batteries sit at around that voltage and can take around 14v or 15v when charging.. What happened to the phone charger??

if you connected the leads around the same way again ie Red meter lead probe to centre pin and black meter probe to outer shell you should read +12.97 volts in both instances.. if your 100% sure you have and you are truly getting -12.97 on the rear this could point to someone previously tampering with it and putting the neg and pos on the wrong way.

Yep, sounds like the rear socket is wired the wrong way around.

    Oooops... didnt notice the -

in which case i'd say either your tester is faulty or you've got an earth problem.. you cannot have -12v on a 12v supply..

even if you had the leads around the wrong way the tester should still show +12v or slightly less as the supply is 12v.. every tester i've had (and i've had a few, im an electrician) shows the voltage on a car battery no matter what way round the leads are.. your best bet to prove polarity would be to check the continuity to earth from the outer of the socket to a suitable point on the body work, like a door hunge bolt etc.. that way you will know that the earth of the socket is actually earthed.. if you get a voltage reading whilst checking continuity then you know know its wired wrong..
a correct continuity reading will show as a dead short or buzz if your tester has a bell or buzzer..
