    Default Random electrical problem

Ok so I'm driving down the M6 this afternoon, in my 2.0 TDi, just heading to junction 1, doing around 70, imagine my suprise when all of the dialls on the dash, speedo, rev counter, temp and fuel tart jumping around, and all the lights flicker and flash eratically. I pull over to the hard shoulder and turn off the engine, guess what - it doesnt start! doesnt even turn over - turn the key - nothing. all the lights, but just nowt to the engine. you can hear the relay clicking. Warning light on the display shows a problem with the power steering.

AA man shows up and basically fiddles for a couple of hours but finds nothing. So i have to be towed back to the garage i bought it from not two weeks ago. Christening missed, party afterwards missed. slight embarrasment after i had been banging on bout how great my new veccy is.

So, anyone got any ideas what it might be - certainly had the aa guy foxed, he checked all the obvious stuff, battery, alternator, checked the battery terminals, tried earthing the car at different points, as i said - he was looking at the car for a good couple of hours....

    Answers on a postcard please.....

    Jon

If it was just your dials then I would say it was your CIM module, about £400 dealer fix unfortunately. But the things that have happened are what happened to mine a couple of years back, turned out to be the power steering pump, car wouldn't start an so on. Fortunately it was covered under warranty. When the cim goes it will light up power steering/ t/c and the dials will drop, sometimes it also says F instead of numbers on your screen.

Rushy thats great - luckily I got a 1 year parts and labour warranty on the car so i may not need to shell out on this.
Just out of interest, do you know what CIM stands for, or what it does etc etc?

    Column Integration Module
Its in the steering column, it has the steering angle sensors on it hence the TC light coming on and all dash electronics are routed through it. It also houses the immobiliser as well I think, mine has been on the blink for about a year, it only goes mad about twice a month but never looses power, all I do is turn ignition off and back on and it clears the problem.

Thanks for that - i had read about intermittant faults being cured by switching ignition off and back on again, which is what i tried, but was then gutted when it didnt start - i could see junction 1 in the distance and could have at least limped along the hard shoulder to relative safety of a sliproad, had i hept it running!!

Been there mate....two choises, one allready mentioned by Rushy, the other ones is related to the several threads about "dials dropping" wich is realated to a fault on an electrical connection in the ABS plug if I remebber correctly.
When I bought the beast suffered from funny dials and sometimes did not start untill I unpluged and replugged this electrical block.....problem solved since then...might do the trick for you too and save 400 GBPs on a new CIM

Rob, ruling out my own problems here, reading the links in your link my car falls into the category of the ABS plug, although I still think it might be the CIM on mine but I'll try and rule out the cheapest first. The ABS plug I take it is the massive Scart looking plug behind the battery box. What did you do to take it off? Also did you clean any of the pins?
