Default Poor starting and limp 2.0 DTi engine.

    Hi all,

I've been a big fan of the Vectra since my first 1.8 LS (N-reg) which lasted me over 100,000 miles with almost no problems at all. So, after trying a few other cars, I'm back to a trusty Vectra again. I've got a 52 (registered in 2003) 2.0 DTi Club which I've had for over a year. It has always seemed a bit limp and is REALLY bad to start. On a cold, wet day it can take almost 10-15 seconds of turning over before it kicks in and then sometime runs lumpy for a further 10-15 seconds. Once it is over this little episode, it's much better and like I said it's a bit limp. My dad has a 2.0 diesel Passat and his is a rocket compared to mine. There are not warning lights and it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse in the last year (and 30,000 miles). The only thing I've found that makes a difference is if I leave the ignition on for about 10 seconds before kicking over the engine, long after the glow plugs lights have gone out. It starts a bit better and seems more normal to start but makes no difference to the performance.

Can anyone suggest what is going on or anything else I can do to try and diagnose the problem? It's livable but it makes me want to chop it in for another car, which is a shame considering what a trooper my old Vectra was.

    Cheers,
    Richard.

Oh, I forgot to mention that it produces a puff of white smoke once it finally kicks off, too.

Doesn't anyone have any suggestion at all? I'm suspecting something to do with the pressure in the common rail? But that's only my highly uneducated guess...

Very uneducated - the DTi uses an electronically controlled rotary pump.

My first suggestion would be the injector spill pipes. Very cheap to replace, so that's the place to start.
