    Default NYPD - impressive

The missus and I are in New York at the moment. Met up with good friend who gladly took us 'downtown' shopping and sites etc. We ended up at a BBQ restaurant on 7th and 50th near Times Square. Just as we'd paid-up and were about leaving our friend realised her handbag had been stolen, right from the back of her chair.

FOUR police officers turned up ten minutes later and took details and statements. They checked the CCTV, searched the toilets and questioned some customers, all routine stuff, but I couldn't help compare that to a similar incident in central London where a friend was told the police WONT be attending the crime scene and she should file an incident report form at a local station.

To witness such a fast and proactive response, to what must be such a common crime, invariably impacts on public confidence and perception of the NYPD. Perhaps this is what they mean when they say New York is much safer these days. As for our friend, because she was able to fill out the incident report sheet within minutes of the crime happening there wont be a 'dead zone' for the credit or debit card companies to query purchases after the theft. Despite the circumstances I came away with a sense of deep admiration and respect for what must be, even at the best of times, a tough job. NYPD

Good response. Although this could have have something to do with it:

"The NYPD's current authorized uniformed strength is 37,838. There are also an approximate 4,500 Auxiliary Police Officers, 5,000 School Safety Agents, 2,300 Traffic Agents, and 370 Traffic Agent Supervisors."

I had 4 (four) on my last shift

Yes new york is an admiral place, things happen alot more smoother and easie as they have to deal with alot of crimes from alot of people, such a speedy response by police, its something our country could learn upon and then maybe we wouldn't be such a crimed area.

Interesting, it's all paid for through taxes at the end of the day, how do those figures compare with London, MLC?

You're right about the higher police presence, they seem to be on most street corners, they just blend in. I guess they can't stop the petty crime, but just 'being there' must prevent a higher proportion of it.

Not sure how many the Met have. But of course the NYPD probably haven't had their response Policing decimated by a Government intent on making Political gimmicks through 'Local Policing Teams'.

These don't deal with crime, won't respond to incidents, but will be happy to send a CSO around with a leaflet.

While your in New York, Be careful of an electronics store on Bryants Square. They have a habbit of "increasing" your credit card bill with out you knowing. They give you the hard sell, make you wanna get your goods and leave asap. You don't check what you sign as your desperate to get out, when you return home its $100 or so more than it should be. Lesson - Check what you sign!!!!
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Don't they have something like one officer for every 40 of the population where were more like one for every few hundred. I've just done a quick sum and in my area there is one officer per 422 people, take into account most of those drive desks. A rough figure for our county would give you perhaps 75 beat officers to cover an entire county at any one time, plus specials, firearms, snt, pcso etc..
