Engine Noise

1.8 Petrol 2002

There's a funny noise coming from my engine, its like the rumbling noise you get when you drive over a rough road surface, and I seem to have lost some power in the engine too, I checked under the bonnet but the noise isn't there when idling. Its more apparent when going up hills in high gears/low revs.

I'm guessing its a timing belt, but my cars currently sitting at 63,000 and timing was last changed at 37,000. Vauxhall done the timing belt job, so I wouldnt be surprised if they botched it.

is a Timing belt something that has to be changed at a set interval or does it depend on driving characteristics ? and also no warning lights have came on yet, so is it safe to drive the car or should I get the belt changed ?

Try looking at the "rubber" connection to your injection unit. I had a similar problem with my 1.8 years ago and had to call out the RAC, and within 20 seconds found the fault. if the connection is loose leading into the inj-unit it will draw in more air and make a similar sound, with a loss of performance. Worth a look I say.

what does the injection unit look like, and where is it under the bonnet, I have absolutely no idea, lol

If you look at the left hand side of the engine bay, you will see the airfilter housing. It is the rectangular black box hard against the wing. From this ther will be a plastic duct (of sorts) that runs to the Injection unit. At the far end or Injection end of this duct you will see a circlip...this should be tight. If not ensure it sitting on the injection unit correctly and re-tighten this clip. If this is the problem, then the problem should no longer be there. Good luck.

tried this just now, the clip was already tight, re-torqued it just incase. no change. the noise is obvious everytime i take my foot of the accelerator, but when foot is down its not so bad ???

The more I listen to the noise, it seems it might be the exhaust, no warning lights have came on at all. So I dont know ?

Has anybody else has this problem at all ?
