Default Maths Puzzle On Radio Today

3 sisters who live together all chip in for a new tele which costs £30. They pay £10 each.
Tele is due to be delivered in a few days time.
As they are loyal customers the shop keeper returns £5 along with his delivery driver to reimburse them.
Delivery driver can't decide how to fairly split the fiver between the 3 sisters so he keeps £2 for himself & gives the remaining £3 to the sisters, £1 each.
So if the sisters who have paid £10 each and now have £1 each returned that says they've now paid £9 each, between them totals £27. The delivery driver who kept £2 would total £29.

Where did the extra £1 go???

Its the way the question is phrased. You can't add the £2 to the £27 paid out as its part of it i.e:

They have paid out £27 (£30 minus the £3 refund).
The shop keeper has £25 (£30 less the refunded £5)
    And the driver has £2

So £27 paid out = £25 for the shop keeper + £2 for the driver.

So £27 paid out = £25 for the shop keeper + £2 for the driver.

    OR

The 27 comes from the 3 people have now spent 9 each = 27. The driver has 2, total between them is 29

It is the strangeness of the number 9 that makes this work.

It is purely hypothetical anyway - - where can you get a new telly for £30 ?

My dad had me going with this one when for years when i was a kid!!

    heres another:

your locked in a dungeon with 2 doors..one door leads to certain death...one to freedom, and once you open one there is no going back. there is two guards in the rooms, one tells nothing but lies and the other tells nothing but the truth and you dont know which one is which. you are allowed to ask any 1 guard 1 question to help you make your decision on which door to choose....what is the question???
