    Default Brake Light Warning

    Hey Guys n Gals

Got in the car this morning and on the display unit it said BRAKE LIGHT. I presumed it was telling me I needed a new brake light so gave the wife a shout to come out and press the brake light while I checked

    BUT

They all worked - nice and bright - no obvious differences or changes

Any ideas / this happened to anyone else??

The rear brake bulb is shared with one of the 2 tail lights. If the upper bulb goes, then the lower one takes over as the tail / brake light.

Take the rear light clusters out and visually inspect that each bulb is working. Could be that the upper tail /brake bulb has failed and the lower one has taken over.

    Bulbs from top to bottom:
    Turn signal light
    Tail light / brake light
    Tail light
Fog tail light (works on drivers side only - this is normal for the UK)
    Reversing light

    All bulbs are 21 watt.

Where are you guys getting replacement bulbs from?
reason I ask is that according to Halfords, I need a 381 type bulb. The ones they sell have two filaments whereas the GM lower rear tail light I think has only one, fitting a Halfords 381 bulb in the lower rear tail position sees the less bright filament being used and results in it looking as if its not on... also the bayonet fixings on these bulbs are at different heights whereas standard fit GM bulbs have them at the same height...

    help?

All the bulbs in the rear clusters only have one filament, that being a 12 volt 21 watt bulb. For the tail light a reduced voltage is supplied to the bulb (to make it dimmer) and when it becomes a brake light the voltage is increased to make it brighter.

See my post further up for info/layout of the bulbs in the rear clusters.

    Thanks Dave,

Does that make Halfords 'bulb giude' utter rubbish then?...
I'll be popping in there at lunchtime to get the RIGHT bulbs....
