Not that I know too much about diesels. But I would say that one of the pre-heaters is not working,

I would agree, sounds like a glow plug not functioning correctly.

Is the smoke black or white and smelly? Does it run 'lumpy' at idle too?

When you say warm, do you mean it takes until the engine has warmed to near normal operation before it runs OK? Or just something like half a minute? If it doesn't get better till it's nearly reached operating temp, then it may be more than a defective glowplug, perhaps an injector or an injector seal.

Have you tried using a diesel injector cleaner fuel additive ?

Are all the air hoses completely sealed and no splits?

This sounds like you have an injector staying open and dumping fuel into the cylinder i am sure there was an issue with the injector wiring on some CDTi 's and it came back as an "open circuit" as far as heater plugs go they will only come on if the car decides it is cold enough to need them and i have never heard of any veccy cdti needing them !!!!they just dont break anymore !!!

    Back in a V6 !!!!!!!!!!!! And lovin it !!!

Absolutely. Sounds a lot like a goosed injector.
