    Default ***** Dealers !

Well I booked the Signum in for a service and MOT at my usual dealers, told them anytime around 5PM would do as I was at work till then and asked them to ring if anything needed doing - so far so good.
4:30 comes around and no ones rung so I thought I'd better check everything was OK. Rang them "Oh yes Sir, your car will be ready around 4:45"
Great I thought, turns up at around 5:30 and when I was being handed the documents and bill was casually told - "by the way sir it failed its MOT"
    WTF!!
To cut a long story short they hadn't bothered to tell me because "your MOT doesn't expire for another 3 weeks sir".
Now I need to book it in again to get the headlight sorted !

Your opinion ladies and gentlemen before I name and shame.

mmm is a bit crappy, you would have thought if it was a small fix, they would have done it under the service,or at least given you a call to get the ok to do it

IIRC it doesn't matter that your MOT has three weeks to run, i'm pretty sure that if it's failed one before then it's failed non the less and voids your current one ?

If you fail an MOT, I was under the impression that if you fixed the failures within seven days then the retest was Free of charge.

No, your car is still MOT'd until the existing one expires so you still have 3 weeks to do any rectification before submitting for a retest (partial retest in certain situations).

Unless the defect is considered dangerous, then the existing MOT covers the car until it expires.

The 14 days, with no retest fee is NOT standard and is offered as an incentive by garages for you to get the test done with them (In the hope of some repair work business for them). They are entitled to charge a full test fee for certain failures, and half fee for other failures. That is the DfT line, but reduction or waiver of fees is common as previously explained. They are under NO obligation to reduce / waive test fees.

Some failures require a full retest, whilst other failures can get away with just checking the repair.

Where I go offer 14 days retest with no fee.

    Thanks everyone,
as an adjunct I naively thought that undergoing a major service (4 yr) would mean the car was returned in a roadworthy condition - but that's another point to discuss.

Well I am reluctant to do this as these guys have served me very well (30 years) until now, I'm hoping this was a one off
