    Not sure about diesels, but you definitely shouldn't bump start a petrol car that has a cat. You'll dump a load of unburnt fuel into the cat and wreck it/shorten it's life.

    As long as it's not jammed in the flywheel, should be ok.

    I know many years ago the main 12V coming from the battery was fed directly to the starter and if there was an connection problem then you'd struggle, but it shouldn't be the case on a modern car.

    You can reduce the life of the cat, but it's ok for the odd occasion.
