Default 1.9 CDTi Swirl Valve Rod Pics

This is the condition of the top of my inlet manfold where the swirl valve rod is.
The pictures are of no`2 and no`4 , as no`1 and 3 are clean.(Looking at the rod from the top air box to the left.)They are in no particular order.

You can see there is alot of gunk/oil there.Mainly round valve no`4.I have tried to clean it - hence the scrape marks, but soon realised that this would be a wasted effort on my part.
My car had p0400 code diagnosed the other day.(EGR valve now on back order). The vxl mechanic said that the gunk and oil is quite normal as it`s a diesel.mmmmmm
The rod does move, doen`t stick - wife started car and blipped the throttle and it moved.Did seem on occasion a tad tight in it`s movement. Also the rod although attached, seemed sloppy. Can be moved around easily and up and down also.
From what I`ve read it indictaes worn swirl valve seals - allowing gunk out and more unstable air in.
A new inlet manifold which has been redesigned by vxl is the only option - with electric drive module and rod.Parts in the region of £400 or at dealer fitted around £800
I intend to run the car till this part fails - comes off or code p1109 comes up then my hand will be forced.
I now see why in some quarters the CDTi is viewed as an unreliable lump.Poor design catching up on owners especially those of the 1st generation of CDTi`s like mine.I wonder how many people are driving around totally unaware of the problem being told by dealers that " all of them are like that sir",and putting up with it.
I bought this car as a long term buy - I wonder how long ` long term buy means`?
I suppose if I did have the inlet manifold replaced etc apart from issues with DPF`s and DMF there is not much left engine wise to go wrong with it -true or false?
The car has only done 31000 miles and will be 4 years old in september. Some of the stuff that needs doing seems stupid on ths mileage/age of car.
Friends told be to buy an Avensis D-4D with it`s reputation on build quaity and reliabity.Wish I had listened more now.

So any thoughts on what I`ve said?

Mine's the same on the right hand side - and you know where the gunge came from? The oil filler. Yup, all round the oil filler cap is minging black, oil will run down into that hole, all round the back of the vacuum pump, etc. There's some pipes around that area which aren't exactly oil-proof.

I cleaned mine off with spray on degreasant and rinced off with the hose about a month ago and it's still squeaky clean.

Perhaps some of these swirl valve issues are from external gunk building up and sticking the mechanism?

So you sprayed engine degreaser down around the rod area - the full length,no`1 - no`4 swirl valves - where the gunk builds up then rinsed off with water?
What about water ingress into the swirl valves or other parts where the water would flow?

Yeah. Sure water is only squeezed together hydrogen and oxygen. Spluttered for about 2 seconds on first start and no bother since.

I've just been out and had a look at mine and there's a tiny amount of crud around 1-3 and a bit more around no.4 but
there's no oily residue, it's all dry.(05 '55', 31k) On the other hand my last one had lots of oil/gunk around all 4
    valves.(04 '54', 58k)

So is there a VERY minor oil leak or is it coming off the oil cap?
    A closer look is required.
Or is it 3 1/2 years of accumilation?Getting warm and getting runny?
    mmmmmmmmm

Can anything be done to stop it or is it not worth the bother?
Will have to investigate mine to see if it`s similar to yours.

It's a diesel Vauxhall. They all urinate oil.

I'll grab a pic tomorrow evening if you'd like. I left my camera at work so can't get it till tomorrow.
