What colour smoke? Does it do it if he starts when the engine is hot or just when cold?? I guess it goes fine when it has been started for a short time.

Does it take a bit more cranking to start than it used to?

It sounds like a glow plug is not functioning correctly.

White smoke is probably either unburnt fuel, stinks to high heaven of an acrid sweet smell, or simply water vapour from the process of combustion.

If it's UHC then clearly the fuel isn't burning in one or more cylinders. If it's water condensation, then it is normal.

No it stinks, its when the engine is cold. I mentioned unburnt fuel but dont know a resolution to it. i advised him to clean out the fuel lines with reddex or something similar over the weekend but from there i dont know

Firstly, I would check operation of each glow plug individually.

Remove the link wire connecting them all together and check resistance of each one to ground.

Ditto....Mine as above, only thing i will say is that when starting with the glows it does'nt smoke,it seems to occur when the temp is just above 3 0r 4 degrees, iv'e put it down to unburnt fuel m8 because mine has no at all from a hot start? ......Is yours the same.
