Default speeding, have I been caught?

Was travelling along a dual carriage way the other evening in what I assume to be a 70 limit (not a built up area). Before I realised I'd passed under what looked like a SPECS camera (the type that measure your average speed from point a to b.

Thing is I was doing about 85 when i spotted it.

Does this camera also record your actual speed as you pass it, or just your average?

About 1/4 mile up the road were some road works and a 50mph limit. I then passed about 4 of these cameras, but I made sure I was under 50!

Don't understand why the first camera would be outside the 50 restriction. It was as if the road works had moved up the road, but the cameras hadn't been? My average speed between the first & second camera would be over 50 as part of it was outside the road works.

Guess I'll just have to wait & see.

Don't know for definite, but I would imagine that they would disable the first camera, the one before the roadworks, then set the rest to 50mph.

Hopefully one of our BiB will be along with an answer soon....

its the one that records average speed,i used to go through notts to lincoln and there there and you would see people who knew they would only pass pne really belting under them then turning off. so i presume from that its the average.

It is just the average speed.

I regularly travel on the A77 from Kilmarnock southbound and that stretch of road is reported to have more average speed cameras than anywhere else in Britain. They definately only record average speeds because I have never been done yet. My job entails stopping at various points along the route with deliveries, which must be the reason for me not having a summons.
    3.2 v6 Signum and loving it 😁

Are you sure it was a SPECS camera?

It is likely they are using SPECS in the roadworks, but is possible that as you only saw one camera it was NOT a camera but a trafficmaster type device. There are loads of different types of traffic montors about, green, blue, red black. Speed enforcement cams are usually yellow, or have a yellow backing so they stand out.

Either way as has been said SPECS work on average speed, not an instant speed reading.

SPECS use number plate recognition. Camera reads you reg plate and when you pass the next SPECS camera it reads your reg again, and then knows the time it has taken you to pass between the two points and your average speed. Time over distance = speed.

Is it true if you change lanes between cameras they can't keep track?
