Angry Engine Spanner Light And No Power

started this thread as I appear to have hijacked the other thread

any way heres my problem , Signum 2.2 Dti, 53 reg. , will be driving along no problems then spanner light on and no power. turn of then on again and its fine. Can do it once then nothing for a week or so or it can happen 4-5 times in a row. booked in to main dealers tomorrow, anyone know if the re-programme works, I dont want to get ripped off.

Car went into dealers and they said MIGHT need a new throttle body at £240 and if that doesnt work a new fuel pump at £2500 .
Thats on top of the steering rack that has failed and needs a new one at £714.

Anyway thought I would be covered with my WARRANTY DIRECT cover but after numerous emails and calls they are sending down an independent engineer to inspect the vehicle as they are claiming wear and tear (not covered in first 90 days), I got the policy in December. Distinct feeling they are going to 'welch' on me and not pay out...
Anyone had similiar engine problems? or dealings with WD?????

My Vectra B fuel pump went in a similar way to how you describe, thought it was the EGR but cleaned it and no improvement. Still £2500 sounds well over the top for the fuel pump, even including fitting at the dealers, I would have to check but I reckon about half that would be enough, if you have a local diesel specilist I would check with them. It isn't unheard of for dealers to farm work out to a local diesel specialist and then add their bit on.

Keep plugging away at WD. I don't know how mechanically minded you are but if you have a local garage that you trust they may be able to help, warranty companies do on occasion tend to get away with baffling people with science, they employ technicians to handle claims, who if you're not that way inclined come across as experts (which in some cases they are)

Thanks for replys, battery is fine. The car had a major service in november, even so its only done 33,000 miles. Can't believe the steering rack AND fuel pump can go at such low mileage!!!

Yep I asked them to check the price on the fuel pump and they confirmed £1700 + vat and 6 hours to fit.... unreal, I've had BMW's that have been considerably cheaper to run ( and I include big v8's) than a so called 'frugal' sig diesel....
As for trying to baffle me, well I hope they try , I used to be a diesel tech, many years ago but still retain a bit of knowledge. I have a feeling that the 'independent' engineer will call 'wear and tear' its a lot easier than trying to explain a unit failure..

The Bosch part number for your pump (VP44) should be 0 470 504 217. There is only one listed on ESI unlike the three that were listed for my Vectra B (mine was the most expensive) Your local Bosch dealer should be able to give you a price for a pump which I would hope will be cheaper that the stealers.

If you can't find a Bosch dealer locally give me a shout and I might be able to help. If it comes down to the pump that is, also I got mine fitted for £150.00, ok, the diesel specialist was a friend and did me a favour but its still a long way from £800.00

It shouldn't really be classed as wear and tear. The usual failure with the VP44 pump is the fuel quantity solenoid which is the electronic bit in the pump, the mechanical part of the pump is usually still in pretty good condition, and electronics shouldn't really wear, should they?

On rare occasions I am told the solenoid can be reset through the PSG5 (not sure the dealers can do it with Tech 2 as it doesn't communicate directly with the PSG5 but I could be wrong) but it isn't a lasting fix.

Spannerlight/ no power can also be just the humble boost pressure sensor..it will just need cleaning gently with carb cleaner and a soft brush..very common DTi fault..
