    Default Your tax & pay 2008 / 2009

Based on persons under 65 yrs ...

New tax rates : No tax paid on income up to £5225 (2007)

has become : No tax paid on income up to £5435 (2008)

    10 % tax band : Earnings between £5226 - £7455 (2007)

this band has been abolished in 2008 (unlucky for the low paid !)

    Basic rate 22 % : Income between £7456 - £39825. (2007 / 2008)

    Basic rate 20% : Income between £5435 - £41435. (2008 / 2009)

Higher rate applies to all earnings above £39,825 (2007 - 2008)

Higher rate applies to all earnings above £41,435 (2008 - 2009)

So how the hell do you work out where you stand based on that lot ! Well the easiest way is to use http://listentotaxman.com/

You just put in your tax code and gross pay for the year. There are tabs to show what you would have taken home last year / this year / next year.

And its celebration time. Im considered over the pay band for my current job role and have had no pay rise for the last 3 years - however the tax man has kindly changed the tax system into my favour. I should have an extra £7 to spend this year. Thats over 50p a month !

Oh no wait ! Fuel has gone up, council tax has gone up, f***ing everything has gone up. Aw well, tighten the belt another notch.

What they don't tell you is that national insurance has gone up in the last budget. I now pay over £400/year more than I did before the last budget. They forgot to mention that.

national insurance is not a tax. Gordon Brown sais so. Its an ... er ... alternative revenue health & pension funding provision. It should not be confused with a tax because it does not meet the basic criteria for taxes.

I just noticed that, I am in the same boat - my deductions run at just over £1500.00GBP per month - methinks I need to go back into contracting.
