Default Fitted for 314mm discs but fitted with 304mm discs

As the title suggests I have just looked at the front discs/wheel area when I heard a noise going round a tight left hand corner (thought it might be bearing or CV noise).

Anyway, noticed that the top of the pad is actually sitting a few millimetres past the end of the disc (i.e. there is a part of the pad not being worn down, as it sits out past the disc). I think the noise may be the result of this.

I have a suspicion that the garage may have fitted 304mm discs rather than the 314mm which were originally on it (is this possible). Will need to check measurements when I have more time.

Firstly are there any issues with driving with this set up if it is the case (done about 20k since they were changed).

Secondly, I checked on LMF to see how much the discs are on their own but I can’t see them, it only seems to be the full upgrade kit. I know Vaux were doing them at a good price but getting hold of them was bl@@dy difficult. Has anyone bought 314mm disc recently.

I may be talking @rse but I have never seen a pad overhang the disc before (I suppose it has one benefit you don’t get the ridge on the outside of the disc).

I’m going to take it up with the garage tomorrow.

This doesn't sound right at all Swatty.

It's obviously going to be the discs that are the problem as bigger pads wouldn't fit in the calipers.

So no doubt the noise you are getting is where the rim of the disc is cutting into the pads.

Not best pleased if that is the case, but I hope it can be sorted amicably if it is the case that they have fitted smaller discs (means new discs & pads – which I ain’t paying for)

Too flamin right! It should have been obvious to the monkey that fitted them that the pads were overhanging.

Keep us posted and give em grief!

I've got 314mm discs and the pads don't overhang, it would be very possible to fit smaller discs though.

Where did you get your brakes from Nutron (did they come with the car, or did you do the mod, assume it was a kit), interested if there are any issues about tracking a supplier down for the bigger discs.

The early 3.0cdti and 3.2v6 had the smaller disks fitted from the factory, so yes they may have ordered and fitted the wrong ones.

I got Spoons' kit and I believe he got them from LMF. I got a new set of discs from Red Dot but I think you might get them cheaper from LMF or Vauxhall (they won't come grooved though).

Thanks, I will check who does the discs only (did not see them mentioned on the LMF site).
