Default 2.0 DTi oil in water

I hope someone can help me. I have a Vectra C 2002 2.0 DTi LS. 114k miles on the clock.

I am getting oil in the water. And I mean lots of it. Over 1 litre in 120 miles in the expansion tank, but car runs fine (untill there is hardly any water left of course). No water in the oil. Local garage took head off and skimmed it. They say head is now fine, but still getting the oil in the water. Garage suggest a second hand engine.

    Two questions -
Anything else could be causing this?
Does X20DTH engine fit the later Vectra C with Y20DTH engine? X20DTH is much cheaper from breaker.

    Thanks.

have they checked the oil/water intercooler... a popular failing point?......looks just like a headgasket when it goes, but isn't....

I'd get the oil cooler pressure checked as i think you'll find it's leaking..

I think you may be right. Oil cooler sounds more likely than head or block problem.
Do you have any info on how to change it. A Link to a diagram or photo perhaps.

    Thanks, much appreciated.

no photo's sorry.. but it's to be found under the plastic sheild on the front of your engine..a finned structure with waterpipes leading off it..it's not too hard to change...just the unions for the oil/water feeds..

    Default 2.0 DTioil in water

I just ordered the cooler / oil filter housing assembly. Apparently the housing is often cracked because of over tightening of the oil filter. Dealer said they change them all the time. Cooler by itself is £96 +VAT and the assembly already assembled and including the cooler is £142 +VAT and you can't buy the oil filter housing seperatley, so it made sense to get it all for not much more.

    thanks for the info.

Default 2.0 DTi oil in water

A correction to my last post.

When I went to collect the part the parts chap has got it wrong. The oil cooler and oil filter mount do not come as a single part. The cooler is £97 + VAT and the oil filter mount is £142 + VAT extra! I only really needed the cooler so he gave me a credit and a 10% discount for my trouble. Can't complain at that.
