    Default removal of private plate

    hi everyone.

at present i have a private plate on my car.

the car is being sold this week but i wish to keep the plate,

question is will it cost me to put the old plate back on and keep mine, not planning on putting it on another vehicle at present but as far as im aware have 12 months to do this.

    many thanks

You need to contact DVLA about getting the old plate number back, and transferring tax, MOT (if applic) etc over to the new (old !) number. If you want to retain the private reg, then you need to get it put on 'retention', this allows it to be held for your use for 12 months, or you can extend it then for a few quid.

Yes, the whole thing will cost you..

Not sure if you will get the old number back in a week though.

I did a swap April last year and I am sure it cost me £100 which is worked out as a retention fee and a swap fee for the future included.

yes it does. It includes any necessary changes to documents, but not new plates - you will have to go and buy some new plates.

It's 25 quid per year to hold it. And 80 quid to transfer it. Like you say it's 105 quid to remove it and hold. But when you put it on your next car you have allready paid the 80 quid transfer. If you know what i mean.

Takes about 4 days to get the paperwork through, ie, I sent mine off on Wednesday recorded delivery, received the new docs and tax disc on the Saturday.
    Good service IMHO.
