Default detailing help hints and tips please

when using an electric polisher, do you change the sponge pad for different substances eg. scratch x, polish, sealant/glaze, wax? or are some of these easier to do by hand?

im scared of burning the paint or going through the clear coat. i tend to use a bottle of water and spray onto paint to keep cool..is this right?

any help/hints/tips would be very much appreciated

it all depends on what you are using equipment wise...

    very quick answer...

what polishes are you using and name all products

generally it should be ok, as the polishes are designed to cut the paint to get the paint to shine and remove swirls etc.

If your using a Porter Cable of the new Meg's one , then theres little chance of damage as they are Random Orbital polishers, If you have a 9" angle grinder then YES you could well cause problems ! They are for the more professional detailer .
You should be ok with most 'off the shelf ' products but always read the labels. They give you the best info on how to use them.
If in doubt use on a test area.

Just use the least aggressive combination first mate and work your way up, so least aggressive polish with least aggressive pad, you can never add paint! The Makita will have enough weight behind it so don't really need to apply pressure. There are some great guides on DW and if you look around You Tube the are some great ones on the from Megs USA. Water is actually one of the best polishing mediums available when machine polishing, can get a bit messy when the compounding head is soaked through though but does give an excellent finish after compounding.
Despite the cost of living it still seems popular!
