    Default rattling sound

Started up car this morning (2.2 petrol 2006 only 20k miles) to a rattling sound coming from the L/H side of engine, took it on a run to get the engine hot and its still rattling, taking it to the dealers in the morning to see what they think.

hi kev m8 you say L/H side of engine is that from standing at the front of the car?
here is 2 things that i have experienced standing in front of the car i found that i had a rattle it was the timing belt tentioner was braking up causing a rattle but my car is a 1.9 cdti diesel so you need to know if its a belt or a chain ,if its a chain they have been known to stretch and snap but im sure it was only on the 2.2 diesels.

if the noise is coming from the L/H side from inside the car it may be the duel mass flywheel (the clutch system) depress and press the clutch to see if it goes away.

if in doubt you could get a screwdriver out and use it like a stethoscope handle in ear and use the blade side to probe for maximum noise.

hope you get it sorted m8,let us know what happens...baz

if it's on the driverside of the engine, then it does sound like the timing chains..in which case get it looked at before it's driven far..

a rattle on the passengerside is usually the flywheel...

well im on the a1 from washington to newcastle 4 times a day taking/picking my wife up from work.

i'm glad i was some help to you as it could have been very expensive if it had snapped (valves and head skim)

dont forget to have the water pump changed at the same time (thats if its on the same chain) i have the 1.9cdti and i was told its good engineering to have it done as the stress of a new belt could cause it to fail premiturely.

its always worth asking if its inline with the chain (anyone on here know?) if it is get it done as you will need the same work done all over again if it fails.

    happy driving m8....baz

there are two chains.. replace BOTH...it's false economy not to..

one chain drives the waterpump and balancer shafts, the other drives the camshafts..

Does anyone know how often you should change the timing chain? I have a 52 plate vectra 2.2dti which has done 76k. When i took it into the garage this morning for it's mot, the mechanic told me that as it was a chain it does not need changing?
Do i beleive him that is the question!?!?!?!?
