    Default Service Extras?

Sent emails asking for costings for the first two year service on my V6Cdti auto.

Got this from one Vx dealer

FIRST 20K/2YEAR SERVICE £250.00 INC VAT

    OPTIONAL BRAKE FLUID CHANGE
(DUE EVERY 2 YEARS) £35.37 INC VAT

OPTIONAL FUEL ADDITIVE £10.00 INC VAT

TOTAL PRICE WITH EXTRAS £295.37 INC VAT

Could anybody explain the optional bits.

Do you need the brake fluid changed or not?
    And what is Fuel additive?

Are these just to inflate the already high service cost?

Currently the best quote I have had is £190 all inclusive, although they did not mention the brake fluid or fuel additive.

    Thanks,

    Neil

Brake fluid does need changing every two years because it absorbs moisture and affects the braking performance of your car. I work for BMW and we also recommend Brake Fluid every two years. Having had a quick look at the Volvo report above, there's also an anti-corrosion additive in it that needs renewing.

The fuel additive is just an engine flush to clean the injectors etc, doesn't really matter either way if you get that done, but it's a tenner I guess so why not?

I'd definitely recommend the brake fluid and you may as well do the fuel treatment... I don't think they're trying to overinflate your service cost as long as they stick to approved intervals. The only slightly exorbitant thing is the fuel treatment I guess...

I think in the old days you could get away with not changing your brake fluid regularly, but with modern cars with all the ABS (and other - expensive) kit, which can be seriously damaged with contaminated brake fluid.....thirty five quid doesn't sound too bad compared to having to replace on of the expensive components.
Fuel additive - I'm not so sure this is necessary if you use a quality brand of fuel.

Just an addition to my previous post, £35.00 for Brake Fluid is extremely cheap, my workshop charges me £75-85 for my BMW used cars!

It still seems strange to me that if the brake fluid needs changing why make it optional, make it part of the service!

Thanks for the replys. Will get them to change the brake fluid too.

They're happy for you not to change the fluid - knowing they'll be selling you an ABS unit for a few hundred quid in the future!
They'll get your money in the end!
    Cynical, moi?

Whilst on the subject of servicing, what should I expect the 40k service to cost?
