Angry Broke down on motorway M1, have a guess at the problem...

In my Vectra C 1.9 CDTi 150 (not my 1.8 SXi which I still have and now have to use)

Outside lane doing 70 mph then spanner light comes on and total loss of power (No engine management light). Still have power steering but I suppose because it is electric it would not be effected. Wack on the hazards and swerve over to the hard shoulder in front of a HGV. Pull up and wait a while and try and start the car, tries to start, turns over but nothing. Called the RAC , 30 mins later and the guy has his head under the bonnet. Reckons cambelt has gone so tows me to the my local VX dealer (bit confused as thought the engine would not turn over if the Cambelt was gone). No loss of water or oil anyway or any signs of water in the oil.

So car has just gone out of warranty but I think VX customer support is going to get a call!

So ideas or guesses on whats gone wrong, no prize to the winner tho Let you all know what the dealers say on monday if they get to look at then.

Car has just had the rear oil seal and sump gasket done under warranty. (Gearbox out and clutch to do the rear oil seal). They told me that the Dual mass flywheel was fine and also the clutch. I reported a thud whenever I tapped the accerator but they could not find out what I meant. It was booked back in for next week for them to have another look and for me to take a tech out for a test drive to show him (because it was reported under warranty they are going to have to sort it!).

Diesel pump or somethign like that. other faults would just cause poor running.

The engine will still turn over with a broken cambelt, it's just the cam that doesn't turn while you are doing it. Were there any piston hitting valve kind of noises or was the speed of the engine turning over uneven? With the cams not turning and the engine turning over there wouldn't be the correct amount of compression holding the engine back so the turnover speed would vary faster and slower as it turned.
Despite the cost of living it still seems popular!

No noises or anything, power then no power as if I had just taken my foot of the accelerator pedal and the spanner light.
