    Default Rear silencer rust

I have a 2.2 Direct Sri with twin outlet system. The rear box on the 'nearside' is flaking badly with rust.It is not blowing but it concerns me.Is this the beginning of the end for the exhaust or is the outer metal a casing over the silencer itself?

I believe there is an outer steel cover that normally rusts and falls off. (it did fall off on my 2003 astra coupe, so i beat it completly off with a shovel!)
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

My Dad's 1.8 had the outer case rust away badly...the backbox itself was OK for approx 18months after, until it failed at the rear inlet....not alot to worry about i dont think John.

The outer casing on one of my back boxes has just fallen off, and I have noticed the other one is a bit rusty.

From what I have read, these items are separate to the exhaust itself and do not trigger the need for a new back box itself...is that correct?

It's a double skin. The outer skin can have holes, or even come off completely and it will still pass an MOT, as long as there are no leaks.

That's what I was hoping, I am off the Germany next week...perhaps Opel spares are cheaper?

I have stopped using the car on a daily basis, and in my experience, when you do that, little things like this start to happen.
