Default Slight engine judder/thud for fraction of a second

I have 1.9 CDTI 120 MY04. It has done 103k now and is having its cambelt and water pump changed next week.

I notice a slight one off judder (a single noise/movement) from the engine when pressing the accelerator at speed. If I let go of the accelerator the same noise/movement also happens. There is no judder what so ever when the pedal is pressed, the engine is very smooth. The noise is hardly audible and it does not sound like metal hitting metal, more like light "thud" that lasts for a fraction of a second and I can feel it slightly through the floor. It is very hard to describe. It does not seem to happen in the lower gears at low speed (less than 30mph) and seems to happen around 2-3k rpm.

Does anyone else have this? This is my first diesel car so I thought perhaps it was a Diesel engine characteristics. I hear no abnormal engine noise, the gears changes are smooth and it accelerates very well without hesitation. Just a very light "thud" when pressing the accelerator and then when depressing it again.

Should I worry? Could it be because of a worn/loose cambelt? I have already spent around £700 on this car...springs, shocks and now cambelt. All wear and tear items so nothing serious. I'm hoping this engine noise/movement is normal...I am just a bit worried. Can't really afford any more repairs...

I get this sometimes, although its very hard to recreate, sometime doesnt do it for weeks, but it always happens at 2000k. I know that one of the injector wires has been rewired sometime in the past (before i had it), so im not sure if its that.

Ive spent about £1500 on suspension items, tires, swirl value, etc etc, the list goes on. I was kind of hoping that buying this car would save me money in the long run, lol

I can actually recreate mine any time... I just drive to about 50mph put it in 4th 5th or 6th gear... When I let go off the accelerator I hear the light thud.. When I press the accelerator again i hear exactly the same thud. and I must point out that it is very faint.

I too bought this car to save some money....but it's costing me an arm and leg at the moment. I also need new front discs at some point but I think i can change those myself.... Oh well. Its cheaper than buying a brand new car!

Sounds like it might be one of the engine mount rubbers needing replaced.

Agreed with Duncan - probably the rubber split in the front engine mount. Pretty common on the 1.9 Astras, so I can't imagine the Vec is much different.

Exactly what I was thinking, just a note though and probably completely unrelated but on my old Vectra B I had a very similar noise to what has been described, got a new engine mounting only to find the mounting was absolutely fine but where it bolted down the metal had torn away! No rot, just torn, God only knows how that happened.
