Oh well, looks like imm about to join the ranks of the unemployed

Have been working in a care home the past few months, after leaving my previous job.
About 6 weeks ago saw a real nice looking job in the local rag at a local school for autistic adults, so applied and was invited for an interview, the interview went well and i was offered the job so handed in my notice at my present job.
This morning got a letter off the new job i was to start on monday to say due to unsatisfactory refrences they would not be taking me on

So this friday is the last day at my present job, an im in the process of looking for a new job

I thought that employers were not allowed to give a bad refrence

They're not as far as I'm aware, but they can refuse to give one - which I guess would be classed as unsatisfactory.

I'm sorry to hear that, though, fella.. Any chance you could retract your resignation from current job?

Also might be worth contacting the references that you had listed and perhaps asking why it is that they would refuse to give a reference.

I'm fairly sure you can retract your notice before the date arrives. A quick call to the CAB will confirm.

I thought they had to get the references before offering the job to you?, not offer it and then retract it once they've done the references - or were you just too quick in giving your notice?

I don't know, I'm no expert as I've never been fully employed as such, always been self-employed.

Well they can offer the position, "Subject to References" so it looks like that's what's happened.

Is there any reason why your former employer would give you a bad reference? (not looking for an answer BTW) just that if there isn't you should contact them immediatly and find out why the reference was wrong and get them to put it right.

If there is a possible explanation then that's a bit of a bummer as it may have been a fair one.

Companies have to very careful when giving references. Ours our now just:

1. When the person worked for us.

2. What their position was.

3. Would we employ them again.

That's the only info. we give out.

I think that an unfair reference can be challenged in an Industrial Tribunal but as said local CAB will tell you more.

Its fine to give an honest reference, so long as its not vindictive. For example of an employee had a bad time keeping record and this was recorded in the personnel file and maybe the employee has been officially warned about it, then this can be stated in the reference, but you cant say, "in my opinion employee A was a waste of space" as this is vindictive and totally subjective.

Hope you get it sorted, have an honest chat with your current employer explaining the situation, you may never know the outcome untill you try.

You are fully entitled to see the references under the data protection act. Believe me I have done it. A company did the above to me and I knew there was nothing wrong with my references so I asked to see them (took 5 months tho). Turns out the job should not have been offered as they did not have clearance from there european head office. They settled out of court with a 4 fiqure sum! Did it all myself a well without any legal help, well pleased with myself.

Yes that's why the question is would we employ them again.

Standard question on most of the references we get asked for.
