Default down grade from SRI suspension

    good people,
could anyone tell me if it possible to change my SRI suspension to something similar to an Elite or even an LX (or whatever it is called this week).
i have Vec c 2.2SRi on 02 plate and as far as my mate who is a monkey can see all that is fitted is ok but we all have had enough of the rough ride now. ( could be just the roads in london becoming worse but doesn't seem so bad in our response cars at work. Had the car for 4 years and everyhting else is good as gold. Any idea's or suggestions would be a great help.

It's possible - just need to change the springs and dampers. You'll easily find somebody on here with an Elite/LS who'll want to swap for SRi kit.

Although it's odd that you think it's a rough ride. The SRi is certainly a bit firmer, but not OTT. I wonder if it's another issue? Maybe a knackered shock(s) on the rear. The Vectra is renowed for eating the (poor quality) Vx ones. You may regret switching to the Elite/LS suspension as it's, well, somewhat wallowy and not confidence inspiring. I soon changed my Signum Elite suspension for the Irmscher kit (lower and firmer than the SRi type) and even with 18" wheels I wouldn't say it's harsh.

What size wheels have you got on BTW? If they're 19" then that's going to give a rougher ride on bad roads.

    cheers for the swift reply,

I've got the standard 17" wheels. The shocks were all changed about 2 years ago. I do have all the known about noises whith creaks and bangs but not sure if sorting all of those out would make a big difference? and if so how much would it cost to change (even to the SRI standard) the springs, shocks, (even the anti roll bar bushes) and the drop links. can't think of anything else to change but if you can then let me know.

    cheers buddy

Could possibly be things like the drop links, bushes etc. When they go/wear it does give a bit of a 'bangy' ride. Maybe worth checking them/getting them checked over.

EDIT: If you were going to change your springs/shocks I honestly wouldn't get the Vx ones. Spend the same money, or thereabouts, on a decent aftermarket kit. You can still keep the same ride height if you want by going for the relevant kit.

will try and get someone to look at al the bits but the local VX stealer is not up to much IMO so will try and find someone in the Ruislip area that will not try and rip me off.

does this lot sound like it might sort it out:

    x4 new springs
    new drop links
    X4 new shocks
    new anti roll bar bushes
    new rad mounts

any idea of how much poorer i'm going to be

More than likely as they are the potential main culprits. I'd be inclined to not change the shocks/springs unless they're definitely the issue - or unless you really want to change them for something else. I'd get the drop links and bushes all checked over first, and maybe just replaced for piece of mind anyway. They're not expensive and not too difficult to replace. You could find a competent independent who'd do them for much less than a Vx dealer.

What mileage on the car BTW? Have the drop links/bushes ever been replaced?

just turned 80k now and as far as i'm aware they have not been changed. have always taken to VX in past as there was a good one (west end Vx staples corner) just around the corner from where i used to live and i used to just take thier advise on what needed doing and most of the time just left them get on with it and then they'd always show me the work after, but the staff there have changed/moved to different locations and wouldn't trust the lot there know as far as i could throw them.

    Vehicle : Vectra

    Trim : SRI NAV XP

    Engine : 1.9 CDTI 150

    Year : 2007

    Mileage : 72K

I went from standard suspension on my previous Vectra 'C' 1.8 to SRI sports suspension on my Edition100, and I agree with Duncan that standard suspension is wallowy by comparison with SRi, and is much softer, but I wouldn't say SRI is rough, just firmer, and the handling is better.

If you do decide you need to change your shocks, go for Bilstein B4's which I have on the rear. They are cheaper and tons better than VX.

Pity when that happens! - dealers change staff etc.

Given the mileage, and that they drop links/bushes have never been changed, I'd say they'd be more than likely needing replaced. If it was my car, I'd do them first, then look at changing the suspension after that if you felt it needed it - especially as you only renewed the shocks two years ago.

You may also want to have a root around the springs, just to check one hasn't cracked. That'll be easier if you jack the car up.

it does seem like i'm barking up the wrong tree changing to anything other than SRI going by what yourself and John have said. I think i'll just start changing stuff bit by bit and see how it goes.

better actually do some work now or the gov will see to it that i can't afford to do anything

will keep posting with up dates as it might help someone else. Should i post here or is there a more helpful section that i should use

    thanks gents for your help
