You never know, perhaps they have placed "Traffic Shaping" on your connection/account m8?.

What package are you on with them?.

    Two words!

    Eclipse Internet.

I had an issue with my connection just before Christmas. I was immediately connected with someone in the UK who not only personally took on my case but actually rang me back on a daily basis, at the allotted time to keep me updated. The problem was with BT at the local exchange but they went a long way to sort things.

paying £19.99 a month thats supposed to give me 4 meg dont think there is anything on my account last time i phoned about this was told it was because all aol customers were migrating to carphone warehouse and that was what the problem was but as soon as speed slows again i,ll be back onto them (typical slow speed 130kbps) normal speed is usualy around the 4 meg mark

    Hmmm.

The thing is, it all depends on who you end up talking to on the phone.

AOL won't tell you without you asking if you are subject to traffic shaping.

I'm subject to it and will be looking to move ISP's fairly soon.

It's rather unfair as it's meant to penalise large scale downloaders and cut their speeds at peak time. I suspect the reasons behind this is to attempt to discourage piracy and illegal downloads.

However, as I run a web design business from home, I'm uploading and downloading files regularly to my server and the rather unfair thing is that AOL won't differentiate between this perfectly legal activity and those who are downloading illegal material.

That said, the way the UK ADSL network is at the moment, the days of "unlimited downloads" are gone or at the very least, the days of it are numbered.
