Yes, you have to 'rip' all the CDs you own into WMP first. You need to chose in preferences what format you want them ripped into first i.e. you can use WMA (which is a better format I think) and WMP will automatically convert them to MP3 when you burn a disc.
EDIT: You can set WMP so that when it's running and you insert a CD it will automatically RIP it and then eject the drawer when it's done - so you can do a 'conveyor belt' session kinda thing.
Its also better to burn a disc from the hard drive so I would yes
You also may have to rename them rather than just having album A track 1,2,3 etc

Shouldn't think so. WMP will automatically name the tracks with the track number and song title i.e. '01 Name of track' which, depending on the MP3 player, will display on the unit.
EDIT:Andrew - WMP will also automatically get the album/track info from the internet when you insert the CD.
If you have a CDRW software just drag and drop the MP3 files using that software - the Car's CD player should read it as that is all an MP3 Disc is - a music data disc.
You don't necessarily need Windows Media Player!!

Well media player will do a decent job. If go to a high street computer corner shop you will pick good software for buttons.

Also.....burn at as low a speed as your DVDR drive will allow.
And use as high quality CDR's as you can get your mitts on.
Vaux CD players are very "fickle" when it comes to listening to burned CD's in them.
Burn at too high a speed and use El-Cheapo CDR's and you may run the risk of the CD's jumping/skipping all the time throughout each track.
Just remember if using windows to burn it as a data cd and not audio , I've just started doing mine. Got over 50 albums on 5 cd's so far, does take a while though
