    Default Super Unleaded

Filled up yesterday with Tesco 99 Ron Super Unleaded and my car did seem to be slightly more responsive and fuel economy slightly improved. Have always been sceptical about using SUL, but would happily be converted. I was happy with the car in standard tune (with a K&N filter from when I got it), but it just seems to get better each time I've changed things with the BSR remap, airbox mod and now SUL. So maybe Mark1319 and Duncan are right in what they say about SUL.

Yep, the Stage 1 definitely gets its full potential from using SUL, and on Stage 3 I have to use SUL.

Thanks. I think I will stop being a 'Doubting Thomas', Dunc.

The car seems to be more responsive and even more refined at the same time. Also, fitting Bilstein B4 dampers on the rear makes it feel more 'planted', and stable at high speed. In short, it just feels properly 'balanced' on the move.

What, if any, is the difference between Shell V-power which IIRC is 88ron, and Tesco Super Unleaded 99ron? (Apart from 1 ron, that is ).
The reason I ask is that V-power is half a mile away from me, and Tesco SUL is 5 miles away (but just off a by-pass - any excuse for a quick blast)

The V-power is 99Ron John, the old optimax was 98 IIRC. What I think you might find is the Tesco might be slightly cheaper, I'm paying anywhere from 1110.9 in Scotland to 113.9+ down south. Not sure how that compares to T99.

Another convert LOL The power might not be a lot different, but to me it's smoother and as you say more responsive.

1110.9 in Scotland? Jeeeez, the Scottish Assembly must have really hiked up tax on petrol to pay for the Nationalists grand plans.

Thanks for reply. Seems they will be much of a muchness then.

Of course. At Tesco, I paid 112.9p for the 99ron, compared with 107.9 for the 95ron. The Shell 95ron round here is 103.9, and their 99ron is 110.9.

I've seen a lot of good stuff about the Tesco 99Ron saying it was very good and some tests done were showing it was actually 102Ron. Think it was PistonHeads that done the test.

Any petrol turbo engine that has been tuned, even to stage 1 should always use super unleaded of some description.

When re-maps are written, one of the reasons you get more power is because the 'mappers' take out some of the tolerance written in by manufacturers for cheap fuel and bad servicing etc. You will always run the risk of detonation with lower grade fuels on mapped cars.

Regarding John k SRi's comments about the car feeling more responsive and better mpg is bang on. The re-maps thrive on higher octane fuels and therefore work more efficiently which in turn improves mpg under normal driving contitions.

One you have used about 2-3 tank fulls of the good stuff, you should see even better performance.

Tesco T99 has got itself a reputation as being a better alternative to V-Power and BP Ultimate.

Will have to try the T99 as I've always been put off due to it being supermarket fuel and the escapade in the South East. I'm a bit of a V-power addict, but nothing hurts trying it out.
