Default 2.2 Direct mpg normally this bad?

I have a 04 registered 2.2 direct injection petrol Signum automatic. It has had fuel problems which have meant it has had a new high pressure fuel pump and sensor. However the fuel consumption I have always got out of it (before and after) is 19 mpg around and about and the best I have got is 29 mpg on a run. The car is not driven hard, and I live in what I would describe as normal town, so with reasonable traffic, and only a few hills and it's only done 34000 miles. (I also have and old 2.2 auto Merc but that does typically 26/36mpg on the same trips so I was expecting better with the lot newer car)

I know that peoples experience with mpg varies a lot depending on there circumstances and driving styles but I would like to know if this typical real world mpg from a 2.2 auto Vauxhall and if anyone has suffered bad mpg on one of these and managed to get it fixed and if so what was the cause.

I don’t think that the fuel pump and sensor being replaced has cured an underlying fault. They were replaced on separate occasions after the car cut out registering a fuel pressure fault and it has just cut out again today and doesn’t start till its been standing a while.

Any comments from experience would be very helpful. Thanks.

That seems high consumption to me mate, I have the less economical non-direct 2.2 and mine will get 38mpg on a motorway run, and around 25mpg round town!

    Something is definitely not right!

does seem low, mines a 2.2 direct manual and i get about 31 mpg according to the trip computer which is a mix of short motorway and round town runs so would say something is not as it should be!

As Big Sig said, being an auto your gonna get poorer fuel consumption than a manual

our old 2.2 auto used to struggle to beat the 25MPG i was getting out of the 3.2... so if you're getting better than that, then i'd be impressed..
