is there any free photoshop software available?

im looking to have a play and learn abit of photoshop just wondering if there was a free trial software package or anything?

Yep, you can download a 30 day free trial from the Adobe website.

or if you want something a little less hardcore...

photoshop elements is the stripped down version (still good though) and retails around £60. Can be found bundled free with some printers though

Yep, what they said as well. Whilst Photoshop is the Big Daddy, most people don't use half it's features, and given it doesn't come cheap you'd usually need to be using it professionally to justify the cost. Elements is a good alternative - has some feature of Photoshop without all the real hardcore stuff, plus a few wizard type features to make some things easier - which Photoshop doesn't have. It's all 'manual' in PS.
