Default Swirl valve and Oxy sensor advice please...

Engine Lights on,codes have been read at stealers,2.2sri Pet.
Will need new oxy sensor and swirl.
My question is,they've been failing for three weeks now,and it'll be another 3 weeks before they are fitted,"on order sir"....etc etc.
Can i get away with running the motor to Cardiff and back from Middlesbrough on the 5th (going)to the 7th (returning) of April?
Obviously my torque ain't what it should be me thinks that may be the swirl going, but will she hold firm if not a little slow till the parts can be fitted?

As long as the emissions light on the far right of the dash isn't on constantly you shouldn't cause any damage. My emissions light came on and stayed on for a while when the swirl flaps went but it did eventually extinguish and everything returned to normal except for the warning light flashing on once every time I started up.

If the emissions light is staying on and it's in limp you run the risk of damaging something expensive.

Thanks for that one lads,it's gone out three times now after 20 re ignitions,
However i have a feeling it's going to stay on this time,as my it's just done another 20 and not gone out. I've a petrol and apart from it being sluggish low down in the range as the power increases she runs like a dream.
Hmm,well if it stays on i shall have to think of alternative arrangements me thinks.....

If it stays on and you have a lambda fault there is a strong possibility you could wreck the cat so I would seriously consider 'alternative arrangements' swirl flaps will more likely just kill the power.

Thats the one, a lambda or oxygen sensor measures the amount of oxygen in the unburnt gasses and sends a signal back to the ECU to control the fuel delivery to ensure the optimum mix of air to fuel. Lambda 1 which is ideal is 14.7 to 1 which is what it tries to achieve constantly. this is called a closed loop system. The pre cat lambda measures what is coming out of the engine, post cat checks to see what a good job the cat is doing. Engine demand varies the ratio but the lambda sensor keeps changing it to maintain the optimum mix. A faulty lamba sensor puts the engine into a default mode which is likely to then provide more fuel than the cat can cope with and kill it as although it knows roughly what voltage to provide it cannot accurately mimic the closed loop provided by an active sensor.

Default Will it get chewy with the warranty?

Your a top man Steel mate, thanks for that!
I take it this works the same for Petrol as for Diesel then as in the last few days my Mpg has started to look more like a Gsi 3.2 than a 2.2 SRi
Well can i take it then that as they have allowed me the car back with no advice on how far i drive her, that if the cat is ruined by the time they have her back that they will replace it under warranty too?
The warranty runs out on the 31st of March,I ask you, i've had no problems all this time(apart from the DMF being replaced) and now problems, even though small it's the technicalities that get chewy!
Of course i've reported the problems in middle march and so far all to be done will be covered, but what about anything that is damaged in conjunction with the original job,but not uncovered until after warranty expires?

Diesels don't have lambda sensors, they don't go well with the soot!

Although you have to wait for the swirl flaps I can see no reason why they wouldn't replace the lambda sensor for the interim period, given the damage it could potentially cause it almost seems irresponsible to me given the fact they take minutes to fit!

My feeling is that as you have reported the fault within the warranty period and they have diagnosed it your warranty should cover the repairs regardless of when they get the bits, it's not your fault after all.

When I had my swirl flaps replaced they tried to charge me for the insurance on the courtesy car as well. I made the point that as it was a warranty issue it shouldn't cost me a penny, they never mentioned it again and there was no bill when I collected it, again they have insurance to cover people test driving cars and they don't charge them for that do they? Or do they do it for the extra tenner plus vat they wnated to charge me? Call me cynical
