Default Help buying a cheap used

We are looking at buying a cheap runaround car for my brother who is at university and we have found a Rover 214 S with 85,000 miles on an "s" reg. It has been owned by one lady for 5 years and serviceing is all up to date. long mot and tax too

Does anybody have any experience of these cars, and at £650, is it a good buy?

TBH, I'd have to say no and speaking from experience.

THe 1.4 is a cracking engine when it's going well, but, it has a fondness for blowing head gaskets, we had ours repaired, but it was never quite right afterwards. Indeed, it was a particularly pampered example, but it suddenly became a big red money pit, blowing oil seals, 2 alternators and countless other bits and bobs. On that subject, how long are Rover parts going to be available for?

I'd look for a Focus or Astra, for similair money, to be honest. You know where you are with them.
