Default Turbo Broken - 3.0 CDTI SRI

i have a 2004 hatchback 3.0 CDTI with faults I have come to live with such as replacement wiper linkage and a handbrake that occasionally turns itself off.

About 3 weeks ago, I have the spanner light and no power. Stupidly pulled into a Net Q dealer as I passed one. Told me Turbo was broken and said it wold be £2000 to fix.

I phoned vauxhall directly about good will. Car had done 78.000 full dealer service history since new etc. They said that they would probably contribute 1/3 of cost but the dealer would need to call them. Told dealer who appeared unhappy about this and said that if they did it that way then they would have to follow guidelines (replace intercooler?) and the cost would be closer to £3000 ? Then got call from dealer saying Vauxhall would not contribute anyway. I phoned Vauxhall UK to ask why the change of heart and they said they HAD NEVER spoken to the dealer? DEALER can't even be honest about that.

Had the car collected on low loader from garage and taken elsewhere. Had turbo checked by other garage who say that something has come from engine to brake turbo. They say it could be a piece from a glow plug or something so waiting to hear. If not the glowplug then they are recommending a camera to look inside before fitting new turbo incase there is something more serious,.

Told car is only worth £4500 (when fixed) and considering what it might be worth scrap? and walking away from Vauxhall altogether.

Any suggestions welcome. I am not a DIY sort or person so any fixing will need to be done by a garage?

    cheers
    Tom

but surely even if some peice of metal did leave the exhaust port and on the blades it would of damaged the piston/valves/bore etc, infact it could of even bend a rod but with out stripping there is no way really to tell, i high doubt it tho.

    and....

Diesels have a very tight compression space, so any bit of foreign material could cause damage that otherwise might not on a petrol

Could this bee a write off in terms of value, i have no idea what it would be worth to a breaker, everything else is in good condition?

dont know, im sure Mark (GSI 3.2) will be along shorty when he gets up

The 3.0 being an Izuzu engine means spares/parts are mega expensive.

A reconditioned turbo should be a lot less than that. A dealer doesn't need to do it, a good independent would be a lot cheaper.

I would expect that they need to remove the turbo to take a look. Do you mean that a piece of the turbo has come away and got lodged in the engine? I thinks thats what they mean by stuffing a camera down as there arent any spark plug holes to peer through on a diesel. This doesnt happen often, as most bits land at the bottom of the intercooler. Removal of the intercooler is straight forward and can be cleaned easily.

I would be tempted to fit a new turbo, clean the intercooler. The convoluted intake system would present a serious blockage to turbo debris. This is my opinion though, so do what you think is right.

I cant remember what type of turbo is fitted to the 3.0, but it may be worth giving Turbo Technics a call as they do exchange turbos that should cost no more that £1000. (A brand new Astra VXR turbo is £460, and thats from Vaux)

Cant believe the dealer, I'm sure that they dreamt a figure up.
