    It's called diesel!

As long as it doesn't smoke when the box is off and the smoke is nice and dark, it's not a problem (unless you find it too embaracing ) The increased pressure in the cylinders allows more fuel to be burnt and more power to be produced but alot of the extra fuel doesn't get burnt and just comes out the exhaust.

you need to get a milder setting put onto it, and change the air filter for a new one...black smoke is poorly burnt diesel ( and far too much of it)..the V6 CDti has always been smoky when boxed..

as nutron says, they are all the same size ( except 2.8T's and very early 1.8's)

A tuning box is not a good idea on the V6.I fitted a CRD Red to mine and had all sorts of problems with it that didn't manifest themselves immediately.Even on the lowest setting it would cause high and low fuel pressure problems and may have even caused a turbo failure! Problems with the high pressure fuel pumps are also not uncommon.Removing the box when you're finally fed up with it will also cause problems because it lowers the fuel pressure to below normal levels and therefore triggers limp mode in certain circumstances. This is also why there always seems to be a big difference between taking the box off and putting it on again.I've not had the box on for ages now which has allowed the fuel pressure to build back up and now it seems to be going as well as when the box was on! It's perception!

Black smoke, even on the lowest setting, was always present. These engines can't take much more fuelling above standard without causing loads of black smoke.Apparently fuelling around peak power is extremely critical. If it's put in too early in the revs you won't get a very high increase in bhp,too late and you'll get just black smoke. If you insist on having a tuning box on it's best to have the box re-profiled so you just get the extra torque in the mid-range and forget about horsepower figures.

    Happy tuning!

if you want 250 from it you'll just not get there.. the 3ltr just doesn't tune that well...

so far, the most reliable way of tuning a pre facelift euro3 3ltr is torquingBHP's remap.. 2 members have it and it's covered a combined 70,000 miles without faults...

if it's a euro4 post facelift engine then they look the same but aren't tuneable reliably.. they suffer with high pressure fuel pump problems and WHEN it fails ( not if) it's £000's...

if you get a decent exhaust on it, the K+N panel filter and the torquingBHP remap you'll be looking at around 225BHP and 450NM of torque... and thats about the max you can get out of them..

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the 3ltr just doesn't tune easily ( or cleanly without smoke)..tuning boxes give way more smoke than a mapped car does BTW....
