    Angry wobbly steering wheel

Two weeks ago I had both front spring coils break on my signum 2.0dti 2005 model, (luckly it was parked) now the garage has replaced one abs unit having returned the car with all the lights on indcating a problem. (See coil spring break thread) Since all the repairs the steering wheel oscilates/rocking about 1" from side to side when holding the steering wheel lightly at 30mph, it also pulls to the left badly at the same time. At motorway speeds the wheel is very tiresome to hold with all the vibration, if speed is increased for overtaking the wheel is difficult to hold for any length of time.

    Any ideas?

My wife had a simular proplem with her Focus but her steering really rocked left and right at low speeds and seem to go at faster speeds. Infact in the 3 years we have had the car its done it twice and it was the front tyres had collapsed on the sidewalls and the tread area and each time it was on Continental tyres. Changed all tyres now and problem has gone.
The first time the tyre was sent to Continental for inspection but they said it was down the car having worn suspension and or steering, the car was 2 months old and again in the last few weeks.
I spoke to a tyre fitter who said that Continentals break down very quickly once they start to get used.
    I hope this helps

wobble to me would be either a dodgy tyre as mentioned or poor balancing,

pulling to the left can be either, low tyre pressure or tracking out

check they tightened the wheels evenly and properly.... it has been known.. other than that, tyre inspection time as changing the springs shouldn't have affected the balance.

All wheels look okay, nuts are tight. Took the car for a long drive today over different types of roads, town and motorway and can make the following observations.

    1. Speed bumps - slow approach no noise, normal approach cruching noise, fast approach cruching noise followed by a thud felt through the floor pan under the clutch pedal.

    2. 30mph steering wheel shakes, 70mph wheel shakes at higher frequency which can be felt through the steering and bodywork of the car, 90mph plus difficult to hold for long periods.

    3. Sweeping fast corners, car feels unstable and floater at the front and back end, hit a bump in the corner and the car appears to flex one way then the other.

    4. Car pulls to the left even when the camber is to the right.

This car was driven by the garage and reported no problems.

So the bottom line is suspect buckled wheel, balance and tracking.

    Any other ideas?

start off with tracking check and a wheel balance..BUT, fitting the springs ( assuming they are the correct ones) and the ABS sensor wouldn't have affected any of the tracking etc...

It shouldn't have any vibrations at all, so it needs inspecting as soon as you can get it done. Not saying it's dangerous, but that something is definatly very wrong now..

Did they put a pair of springs on ???? if so were they the same ??

Also that sounds like something is loose No 3 you describe is the classic sign of worn rear dampers so i would get them checked out

Also did they change the drop links as these can course some noises when going over lumps and bumps

Only other things to check are the steering rack as the arms can wear also the anti roll bar bushes

It just seems strang that this has happened since the "repairs" were done

    Back in a V6 !!!!!!!!!!!! And lovin it !!!

thats what i'm thinking Chris.. if it drove fine before, why does it drive funny now?..what have they touched/failed to do up?...

I wonder if the strut to hub carrier bolts aren't tightened fully?...just trying to wonder what else they would have touched that would cause the vibration??..
