    Default Ball Joint failure

    Hi,my 1.8 52 plate Elegance has just failed its MOT on the following;
    "Nearside front suspension joint has excessive play in a lower suspension ball joint".
    Local garage is doing the repairs on Tuesday,but mechanic seemed unsure whether repair required a replacement arm or a push-in something or other(sorry I'm not mechanically minded!).Quoted about £40 for the parts and less than an hours labour.Any thoughts on this please,before I take it in.Is this a common failure - I haven't noticed any vibrations or steering problems.
    Pete.

    not overly common...I don't know if pattern arms or balljoints are avaliable yet for the C, but given the choice, replace the entire arm...

    Job done Yesterday.Part cost £69 and mechanic charged for half an hours labour.Checked underneath, and yes it's a nice shiny aluminium arm.Drove it home but noticed a knocking from front end.Took it back in today,and mechanic showed me that when the front suspension is "bounced"on the side he fixed,there is a clunk from the top of the suspension strut.Says its nothing to worry about and nothing to do with what he did.Any advice?

    he's have not touched to top of the strut.. no need to...

    sounds like a worn/wearing top bearing mount on the strut..
