Eek Auto box - total loss of gears

    Help

Driving my 2.2 Elite away from the lights after a longish run with the cruise control on, stuck my foot down as it was a three to two lane set of lights, everything ok, then all of a sudden the rev counter goes east off towards the red line, at that point I only had the bare minimum of forward drive and only just enough to limp to safety, no reserve, no tiptronic, nada, zip, zilch and man are they heavy cars to push!

Anyway wondered if anyone had had a similar problem after a heavy right footed set off?

This isn't the first time we've had 'gear' issues as we had a loose pin in the ECU plug which gave us lots of fun for weeks and kept putting the car into safe mode, but this is different as the previous time it would reset. This time it won't.

As one of the previous fixes just before last Christmas they changed the gearbox oil so that should be ok, which was what the recovery guy suggestged it might be.

Nope sorry got me with that one - what does it do and why would it go just because I got on with it or is that just sheer coincidence?

Had exactly the same happen to me a few months back, had vx look at it when it went in for its second service and they reprogrammed the ECU. also when in slow moving traffic it felt like i was being shunted up the behind everytime i stopped after about a 3 second pause as if the gears are taking to long to drop down.

ECU has been reprogrammed as part of the previous round of fixes, pre finding the lose pin.

This fault is different, the engine is running and revving but it's like someone's switched the gearbox off. The last time we had 2nd and 5th gear and reverse, but this time nothing. There was a little something which got me off the main road, but then it didn't even want to do that.

The gearbox is clunky, when it's working it can give you a real kick in the back when it changes down but we figured that was just a charateristic of the car.

Only having 2nd, 5th and reverse usually means it's full of coolant.
Check the coolant bottle for any discolouring or "tide line" stains around it. If there is I have a nasty feeling I know what it is. I hope for your sake I'm wrong unless it's under warranty.
BTW, is this a diesel 2.2?

The previous problem with going into 2nd and 5th was down to various sensors 'tripping' and showing error codes, from an inertia sensor to gearbox etc - it ended up being the loose pin which kept sending wrong messages to the ECU so it looked like all the sensors were going wrong but they weren't.

This time we have no gears at all which is probably more worrying from my point of view than 2nd and 5th gear were.

The coolant is fine and the bottle is clean.
