    Default Timing chain/belt

    Hi all,Great site

When should the timing belt/chain be changed on a 1.8 petrol GTS 2003.
Iam asking because of the clicking noise which is coming from the timing belt side of my engine, the noise can only be heard when the car is just ticking over, any ideas .
    Only 36000 on the clock.

I was told belts need to be changed at 40,000 miles

I'm nearly due for my second replacement. U might want to get the tensioners done at the same time.

I'd be surprised if Vauxhalls recomendation was less than 60k miles, although that would also have a 5year time limit on it aswell.

    Bryan

PS from the service book it looks like 60k or 6years although it doesn't mention the 2.0T or the 2.2 engines.

I done mine at 38,000 to keep the warranty valid. as it has to be done at 40,000 on the older 1.8 engine, the new engines apparantly dont need to have theirs done till 60k

I'm now sitting at 72k so looks like they'll be gettin done again in the summer. not cheap man, cost me £220 the last time.

40K for a timing belt is cr4ppy me thinks. if I knew that before I might have reconsidered buying the car, I'm changing belts every 2 years.

My dealer told me 40k was the limit on my 03 1.8. Think i'll have it done before though to be on the safe side. Always have the rollers changed at the same time or your asking for trouble. Sounds like you've got a noisey bearing on a pulley mate, in witch case have the lot done for peace of mind.

If I remember correctly the "ticking" sound you can hear is the tensioners.

What happens is as the belt stretches over time, the tensioners pick up the extra length on the belt, but when belt stretch gets to a certain point, the tensioners can take up no more and they "lift and drop" hence the "ticking" sound, you may also hear a bit of a squeak when cold.

On mine, the timing belt was on the left of the engine block as you look from the front, and the black plastic cover is a sort of curved triangular shape and covers the left side of the engine from back to front and top to bottom, if you listen here and it's where the ticking is from, it's your timing belt.

This happened on my old 1.8 petrol vec, and I was told to get it changed sooner rather than later by two different garages, one of whom spotted it on an MOT.

I would get it changed bud to be on the safe side.
